Hand numbness is characterized by pain, tingling, and a loss of sensation in the forearm and hand.  It may occur in only one hand, or in both. It is usually caused by compression of one more nerves in your arm and wrist, although there may be other underlying causes. A careful examination and evaluation is required to properly diagnose the cause of numbness of the hand.

Pain, tingling, and a loss of feeling in the hand and fingers are the usual symptoms. There may be a burning feeling, or a pins and needles sensation. In addition, the muscles in the hands and arm may feel weak.

Dr. Cohen will conduct a thorough physical examination to diagnose the cause of hand numbness. Possible underlying causes could include carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, a previous injury or illness, or some medications. Treatment will of course depend upon the underlying cause, and could include surgical or non-surgical options, including medication, splinting, hand therapy, ergonomic modifications, and lifestyle changes.

Dr. Cohen is well known for his conservative approach, and does not rush to surgery if non-surgical methods will lead to the proper outcome.
